It might sound cliche, but Philip Rivers was born to play football and to be a quarterback.
After first standing up under center in middle school, Rivers continued to rise up the ranks and become one of the best passers in NFL history.
The fact that he never played in a Super Bowl doesn’t change the fact that number 17 had a live arm and a fierce determination to win.
Following a fantastic college career at North Carolina State, Rivers was a first-round pick of the New York Giants in 2004 before getting flipped to the San Diego Chargers.
His first two seasons were spent as a backup, but he took the reins in 2006 and proceeded to rewrite the record books.
Astounding as it may seem, in 15 seasons as a starting quarterback, Rivers never missed a game to injury.

Along the way, he led the NFL in passing yards, passing percentage, passing touchdowns, completion percentage and was an eight-time Pro Bowler.
Despite Rivers’ play and his unquestioned leadership, the Chargers only advanced to the AFC Championship one time in his career.
Yet, he is considered one of the best quarterbacks in history never to play in an NFL title game.
After retiring following the 2020 season, Rivers has been a high school coach in his native Alabama where he has been raising 10 children with his wife, Tiffany.
This is the story of Philip Rivers.
Coach’s Son
Philip Michael Rivers was born on December 8, 1981, in Decatur, Alabama.
His father, Steve, was a linebacker at Mississippi State University in the 1970s and then became a high school football coach.
It was Steve’s occupation and influence that led to Philip’s love for the sport when he was still in elementary school.
In fifth grade, Rivers completed an assigned project titled “All About Me.”
The project included a poster where the youngster cut out a picture of NFL receiver Cris Carter and pasted his own face over Carter’s.
“I can see that poster plain as day, and it is crazy to think about,” Rivers said in 2017.
Whenever he wasn’t in school, Philip would tag along while his father ran football practices, and he watched with intention and determination.
He also played ball in the yard, even if there was no one to play with.
Soon enough, Rivers started to show leadership skills that would come in handy as a quarterback.
“I know it sounds ridiculous to say he was a leader at three or four years old, but he started to show leadership skills when he was that young,” said Steve Rivers.
Quarterback In Charge
In seventh grade, Rivers started his first game as a quarterback, then wore the number 17 for the first time in high school to honor his father’s college number.
Steve Rivers became the head coach at Athens (Alabama) High School around the same time his son was entering high school.
For Philip, it was a no-brainer to join his dad’s team.
During his freshman year, Philip played quarterback and tight end, then made the varsity squad as a sophomore.

A senior was already entrenched at QB, so Rivers got his dad’s permission to play linebacker.
“We played in a really good league, and for a linebacker, it required him to be really physical,” said Steve Rivers. “He had to get with it, and he really did. So that was a really good growing lesson for him that 10th-grade year.”
Before his junior season, Philip was named the starting quarterback for the Golden Eagles and never looked back.
Steve and Philip were joined at the hip as the Rivers’ name caught the attention of college recruiters.
“That was so special because we had been waiting for it for so long,” Steve Rivers said. “To see that in my son, and to spend that time, it was (overwhelming) for me. And for him, I know he enjoyed it because he’d been standing around listening to me speak and coach for years.”
As a senior, Rivers had over 2,000 passing yards and 15 touchdowns for 11-2 Athens High.
Following the season, he was named All-State and Super All-State.
The Recruiting Game
College coaches in the region knew well that Philip Rivers could not only sling a football with the best of them, but he was also a spectacular basketball player.

While playing on the hardwood for the Golden Eagles, Rivers once dropped no less than 50 points on an opposing team.
“It was a 10th-grade game. I hit 12 three-pointers. Gosh, that’s crazy. It was one of those nights where you couldn’t miss. We lost, but I had 50 points and my other buddy had 24. And the other team just never missed,” remarked Rivers in 2017.
But football was the name of his game, and Philip wanted to play college ball as soon as he could.
Local schools such as Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss recruited him.
The issue was, each of those schools already had incumbent signal-callers whose starting job was locked down in 2000 (including Rebels’ QB Eli Manning).
While Rivers was a junior at Athens High, assistant coach Joe Pate from North Carolina State University liked the kid’s ability.
In fact, during Philip’s senior year, Pate had an idea that excited the Rivers family.
“Coach Pate was like ‘Hey, I was looking at your transcripts and you can graduate in December and come January,'” Philip recalled. “‘You will he the chance to do spring ball and then you’ll he a better chance to start.’ That was a big pull. I could get there in the spring and golly I could start fresh, there was no other QB, the other guy was gone and I would he the chance to play that year.”
With his plan in place, Rivers signed with the Wolfpack.
Immediate Impact

As expected, Rivers was named the starter by new Wolfpack head coach Chuck Amato to begin the 2000 season.
In his first game as a college quarterback, Rivers passed for just under 400 yards and three touchdowns in a thrilling 38-31 victory in two overtimes against Arkansas State.
A 400-yard game against Indiana followed in Week 2.
On November 11, Rivers rushed for a late touchdown to beat Duke, 35-31.

By the end of the season, NC State was 8-4, a two-win improvement from 1999.
Rivers led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with 441 attempts while also passing for 3,054 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions and was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year.
Along the way, he broke seven school records, was selected as the team MVP and was named ACC Rookie of the Week several times.
The Wolfpack and Rivers next played the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Micron PC Bowl.
By halftime, Minnesota led 24-8.
However, in the second half, Rivers went on a tear and led a 38-30 comeback victory, which in turn brought the QB the MVP award.
More Accolades
During his sophomore year, Rivers led the ACC with a 65.2 completion percentage by connecting on 240 of 368 passes for 2,586 yards, 16 touchdowns, and seven picks and received a second-team All-ACC nod.
NC State went 7-5 in 2001, including a loss to the Pitt Panthers in the Tangerine Bowl.

Even more astounding, Rivers accomplished all that while newly married to his high school sweetheart, Tiffany (the couple ge birth to their first child a year later).
The Wolfpack improved to 11-3 (a school record for wins in a season) in 2002, including a 9-0 start and a 28-6 shellacking of Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl.
Rivers dominated the competition by leading the conference with 418 attempts and 3,353 yards along with 20 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 100 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing.
In the Gator Bowl, he passed for 228 yards and two scores and was named the contest’s MVP.
He also received awards, including first-team All-ACC, ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year.
Dominant Senior Year
The Wolfpack had an up-and-down 2003 and ended it with an 8-5 record.
However, as a senior, Rivers absolutely owned defenses and led the ACC with: 348 completions in 483 attempts, a 72.0 completion percentage (which also led the nation), 4,491 yards, 34 touchdowns, 9.3 yards per passing attempt, 345.5 yards passing per game and a 170.5 efficiency rating (which also led the country).
He also had seven picks, 109 rushing yards and three rushing scores.
During the Tangerine Bowl against the University of Kansas, Rivers went bonkers with 475 passing yards and five touchdowns in a 56-26 blowout, once again bringing him MVP hardware.

Awards season brought the signal-caller ACC Athlete of the Year and he finished seventh in Heisman voting.
Following his senior season, Rivers played in the Senior Bowl and, not surprisingly, was the MVP of the game.
In four years as a starter, Rivers had totals of 13,484 yards (second-best in NCAA history at the time), 95 touchdowns (seventh-best in NCAA history at the time) and 34 interceptions.

On the ground, he rushed for 96 yards and 17 touchdowns, and in 2000, Rivers took a 19-yard pass as a receiver into the end zone.
He also owned a bunch of school, conference, and national records including an NCAA-best 51 consecutive starts.
NC State retired his number 17 during his senior year, and Rivers was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
Draft Day Trade

As the 2004 NFL Draft approached, Rivers, Miami of Ohio’s Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning were the top quarterbacks expected to be first-round picks.
Media members and NFL “experts” dissected Rivers’ sidearm throwing style, calling the motion a potential issue to watch out for.
“No one really said anything until I got to NC State,” Rivers said. “I remember Norm Chow (offensive coordinator) telling me he was watching us off the balcony seeing me throw. He actually sent the tape to Mike Holmgren and some guys he’d been around asking about it. They were like, ‘Well, he gets it off quick. If it’s not a problem, then just lee it alone.'”
The San Diego Chargers really liked Manning and envisioned him being as successful as his older brother, Peyton, in the pros.
2004: Draft Week (3)- Things got more interesting when #NYGiants picked at 4. They wanted @EliManning or Roethlisberger. They didn't want Philip Rivers, but if they picked Rivers, that meant they had a deal in place to send him to San Diego for Eli. Accorsi took Rivers. pic.twitter.com/0BwTcfuA0P
— BigBlueVCR (@BigBlueVCR) April 24, 2024
Unfortunately, the Manning family (including patriarch Archie Manning, another former NFL QB) didn’t want Eli to play in San Diego, calling the organization dysfunctional.
On draft day, the Chargers went ahead and took Manning with the first overall pick, while the New York Giants grabbed Rivers with the fourth overall selection.
How many years are there more than 2 legit NFL QB drafted?

Not long after, both quarterbacks were swapped, and Rivers was now with San Diego and head coach Marty Schottenheimer, who had coached him in the Senior Bowl.
“There for a minute I had to act like a Giant because officially I was,” Rivers said. “I didn’t really know what was going to happen, but a few minutes later I was a Charger. It all worked out.”
In stark contrast to Manning, Rivers couldn’t wait to get to sunny Southern California.
“I’m fired up to be a Charger,” he said during a conference call. “That’s one thing that the town of San Diego and the fans are going to get is a guy who wants to be there and be a part of it.”
After holding out for the next few months, Rivers signed his rookie deal in August for six years and $40.5 million.
Biding His Time
In 2001, the Chargers drafted Purdue quarterback Drew Brees.
By the end of his third season in 2003, the QB’s performance was spotty at best, and backup Doug Flutie wasn’t getting any younger.
Rivers’ selection in 2004 seemed to inspire Brees to play up to his already lofty potential.
Due to the rookie’s holdout from training camp, Brees did more than enough in the preseason to convince Schottenheimer to start him over Rivers and Flutie.
While San Diego went 12-4 in 2004, Rivers saw playing time in just two games and had 33 passing yards and one touchdown.
This might be the greatest leadership story in NFL history.
It was 2004 – Drew Brees was about to lose his starting job to Philip Rivers. The Chargers had already drafted his replacement.
His career hung in the balance.

Meanwhile, Brees received the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year.
A season later, Rivers was still on the bench watching Brees until the final game of the year against the Denver Broncos.
During the game, Brees dove for a fumble and was hit by Broncos defensive tackle Gerrard Warren, tearing the quarterback’s labrum in the process.
Rivers played the rest of the day and finished his second year with two game appearances, 115 passing yards and one interception.
Starter At Last
In the offseason before 2006, Brees was not re-signed by San Diego, and the New Orleans Saints jumped at the chance to add him to their roster.
Now that he had a clear path, Rivers was named the starter for the Bolts and got to work fast.
One of the most underrated disappointments in sports history:

The third-year pro started off okay until a Week 5 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pittsburgh had won Super Bowl XL the year before with Roethlisberger under center.
Instead of folding under the pressure, Rivers stepped up and passed for two touchdowns and 242 yards in a 23-13 statement win.
A little more than a month later, the Chargers were down 28-7 to Cincinnati before Rivers took the reins and led the team on six touchdown drives.
“He’s yelling ‘Y’all don’t think we’re out of this’ to the Bengals. When he said that, I said, ‘Shoot, I guess we ain’t out of this. Right on,'” said Chargers center Nick Hardwick.
San Diego left the Queen City with a 49-41 victory.
The game matched the largest comeback win in franchise history.
One week after that, Rivers led the Chargers to another huge comeback win against Denver, 35-27.
That ge the organization the distinction of becoming the first road team in league history to win back-to-back games after being behind by 17 points or more.

When the season ended, Rivers had helped lead the Bolts to a 14-2 record, the most victories in team history.
He started all 16 games and passed for 3,388 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions, leading to his first Pro Bowl.
Then, in his first postseason as a starter, the New England Patriots ended San Diego’s dream season with a 24-21 upset in the divisional round.
So Close in 2007
San Diego had the same core of players return in 2007.
There was Rivers, running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael “The Burner” Turner, fullback Lorenzo Neal, Chris Chambers, Malcolm Floyd, and Vincent Jackson at receiver, a solid offensive line and a formidable defense.
Norv Turner was now the head coach, and the Chargers went 11-5.
Rivers passed for 3,152 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 15 picks and added a touchdown on the ground.
In the wild card round, San Diego took care of the Tennessee Titans, 17-6, then dispatched the Indianapolis Colts on the road in the divisional round, 28-24.
The following week, the team flew across the country to New England to face the undefeated Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

Rivers played the entire contest with a torn ACL, but the Bolts came up short, 21-12.
“To go out there and put his knee, and ultimately his career, on the line. It has to go down as one of the gutsiest performances,” wrote Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Leading the League

A torn ACL didn’t stop Rivers from returning with a bang in 2008.
San Diego went 8-8 and lost in the divisional round to Pittsburgh, but the quarterback lit up the league in several categories.
That season, he passed for 4,009 yards and led the NFL with 34 touchdowns (actually co-leading the league), a new franchise record.
He also had a 7.1 touchdown percentage, 8.4 yards per attempt, 8.77 adjusted yards per attempt, a 105.5 passer rating and an 8.04 adjusted net yards per pass attempt.

The following year, number 17 signed a six-year contract extension worth $92 million and rewarded the organization by again leading the league in four categories in 2009 while throwing for 4,254 yards, 28 touchdowns and nine picks and added a score on the ground.
His second Pro Bowl awaited him after the season.
During the divisional round against the New York Jets, Rivers passed for 298 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score, but threw two picks as the Chargers lost, 17-14.
Model of Consistency
When Norv Turner arrived in San Diego, he shifted the offensive philosophy away from Tomlinson and the ground attack to an air assault by Rivers.
From 2008 through 2011, the QB had four consecutive 4,000-yard passing seasons.

Rivers also led the NFL in 2010 with 4,710 yards, along with 30 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
In Week 3 that year, he crushed the Seattle Seahawks with 455 passing yards, breaking the single-game franchise record, albeit in a loss.
Rivers passed for 4,624 more yards in 2011, and both 2010 and 2011 brought him Pro Bowl invites.
Can’t Win the Big One
Although Rivers was consistently good, the Chargers as a whole couldn’t get out of their own way.
After the team missed the playoffs three straight years, Turner was fired and Mike McCoy was hired in 2013.

By then, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Rivers’ former Chargers teammate, Drew Brees, had all won Super Bowls.
Rivers had yet to play in one, and the media began wondering just how good he was.
For his part, the QB downplayed the issue.
“I don’t want to win more now because those guys he won titles,” Rivers said in 2012. “That’s not my primary motivation. For me it’s about the journey with these guys in the locker room and helping all of us achieve that goal together.”
When he was on the field, Rivers could be found occasionally chirping at opposing players and even fans.

What he said wasn’t profane, but he enjoyed spicing things up a bit.
“He’s a competitor. You see him on the field, how animated he is, how frustrated he gets,” said former teammate Lorenzo Neal.
In McCoy’s first year, San Diego went 9-7 as Rivers threw for 4,478 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and led the league with a 69.5 completion percentage.
The Chargers returned to the postseason but lost yet again in the divisional round to Denver.
He was named Comeback Player of the Year following a 2012 season where he “only” passed for 3,606 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Rivers Lees San Diego
Three straight seasons of playoff-less football followed for San Diego, leading to McCoy’s departure after 2016.
Rivers continued to pass for over 4,000 yards each year, even hitting a career-high 4,792 while leading the NFL in attempts and completions in 2015.
Before 2017 began, the franchise relocated to Los Angeles, and the QB introduced himself to the City of Angels with 4,515 yards and 28 touchdowns.

In 2018, Coach Anthony Lynn’s bunch rode Rivers’ 4,308 yards and 32 touchdowns to a 12-4 record before losing to New England, 41-28, in the divisional round.
When the team regressed to 5-11 in 2019, Rivers was at the end of his rope, telling the media he might retire.
“In anything you do, it’s the people you do it with that make it special. There are so many relationships and memories with coaches, support staff and teammates that will last forever, and for that I am so thankful."

By early February 2020, the decision was no longer his as Rivers and the Chargers decided to part ways.
“As we talked through various scenarios, it became apparent that it would be best for Philip and the Chargers to turn the page on what has truly been a remarkable run,” said general manager Tom Telesco.
A month later, Rivers signed with the Indianapolis Colts on a one-year deal.
“Philip is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in the NFL, and we are fortunate to add an experienced player of his caliber to our organization,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said.
Last Hurrah

Indianapolis finished 2019 with a 7-9 record and missed the postseason.
Head coach Frank Reich and GM Ballard wanted to oid a repeat performance and signed Rivers to lead the franchise back to respectability.

During his 17th season, he passed for 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while helping the Colts go 11-5.
In Week 10 against the Tennessee Titans, Rivers passed for 308 yards and a touchdown, and he leapfrogged Dan Marino for the fifth spot on the all-time NFL passing yards list.
Facing the Buffalo Bills in the wild card round in Buffalo, the QB passed for 309 yards and two scores, but it wasn’t enough as the Bills prevailed, 27-24.
On January 20, 2021, Rivers retired from pro football.
Hall of Fame Worthy?
During his career, Rivers passed for 63,440 yards, 421 touchdowns, 209 interceptions and rushed for 601 yards and three more scores.
He was an eight-time Pro Bowler, NFL Comeback Player of the Year once, and led the league once each in passing yards, passer rating, passing touchdowns (co-leader) and completion percentage.

Eventually, Rivers was added to the Chargers’ 50th Anniversary Team, and on July 21, 2025, he signed a one-day contract with the organization to retire as a Charger.
“I’m Philip Rivers, quarterback, and I’m retiring a Charger,” Rivers said. “I think gratitude is really the first thing that comes to mind. There were so many highlights and fun Sundays, so many, but what I miss and am most appreciative and thankful for are those relationships.”
As a Charger, Rivers set over 30 franchise records, and he never missed a start in his 15 years as a starter for San Diego/LA and Indianapolis, an extremely rare feat, especially for someone who was sacked 464 times in his career.

Sure enough, he did just that and returned home to Alabama to take over the St. Michael Catholic (Fairhope, Alabama) Cardinals football program.

“It’s the process that makes it awesome,” Rivers said after the win. “Tonight was special. Shoot, I’m looking over and Dad’s standing on the track, Mom’s in the stands, my boys are spotting the ball, my brother is here coaching … it was that kind of night.”
Without a doubt, Rivers is hoping that he’ll be able to watch his kids thrive no matter where they are in life.
