Tips to Recreate Responsibly This WinterSnow may be falling near you and winter fun is just beginning. Whether you are experiencing your public lands under a blanket of snow or simply enjoying a snow-free off-season, the outdoors is a great place to be this time of year.
No matter where you are in the country, it is important to be cautious when skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, or enjoying any other winter activity in what may become difficult harsh conditions. Our friends at Recreate Responsibly remind us that in the winter, the environment changes quickly and access points may be more limited. It may not be cold or snowing close to home, but that could change quickly as you venture out. Here are tips to help you Recreate Responsibly this winter season.
This winter, if snow camping isn’t your thing (brrr!), then seek out the warmth and shelter of a cabin or yurt. These wintertime gems, especially the cabins, often he a unique past – if these walls could talk, you would hear some amazing fire and conservation stories. Or maybe the simple lines of a yurt surrounded by gleaming snow calls to your adventurous side. Either way, picture yourself warm and toasty inside a historic cabin or brushing off the fluffy snow as you settle into your yurt. Time to book your next adventure!
Did you know? Christmas tree permits are ailable on national forests across the country to purchase online through Recreation.gov.
For every tree that is found, cut, and carried home as a holiday fixture, a new story is created. These stories become the precious memories that create traditions worth carrying on for generations and further connect families with their local forests. Braxton Lemmon offered up her "Here is Our Tree" story as part of the Share Your Story adventure writing contest, which is a touching account of their family's first experience with getting a permit and cutting their tree from the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah.
In three simple steps, you can begin the adventure to find and bring home your very own Christmas tree. Search for your local forest, create or log in to your Recreation.gov account, then purchase and print your permit. Now you are ready to venture out and find that special centerpiece to decorate your home for the holidays!
