Social media used to be about connecting with friends. Somewhere along the way, that got lost in the noise of viral content and algorithms. It's time to bring friends back. Today, we're introducing Find Friends — a new way to find the people you know on Bluesky with your phone contacts. Most apps import your contacts knowing phone numbers are vulnerable to enumeration attacks — even with encryption, the limited set of possible numbers makes them easy to guess through brute force. We weren't willing to accept that risk, so we developed a new approach that's fundamentally more secure and gives you full control. - Bluesky asks everyone to verify their phone number before using Find Friends, proving you own the number you're using. - We also require that all matches are mutual, so someone will only match with you if both of you he each other in your contacts. - Plus, instead of storing phone numbers as plain text like other apps do, we encode phone number pairs, protecting them from enumeration.
