The body that manages the Peak District has announced a reduction in services and voluntary redundancies in anticipation of a cut in government funding.

The Peak District National Park Authority currently receives about £6.67m a year from the government, but the three-year arrangement ends this financial year.

Ahead of learning its financial future for the next two years, the body has been planning "for further significant financial challenges due to a declining government grant and increasing costs".

As well as asking employees to apply for voluntary redundancy, it has this week agreed changes to its structure, with its landscape and engagement service being cut following a staff consultation.

A number of teams within the authority will see a reduction in size, it added.

About 280 people are employed by the body, including rangers, ecologists, and archaeologists, but it has not said how many staff will be taking voluntary redundancy.

The authority, based in Bakewell in Derbyshire, previously said it had had a 50% real terms funding cut over the last decade, while grappling with issues like wildfires and dangerous parking.

A statement from the organisation said: "It is extremely regrettable that the authority is being put into a position where it has had to make such difficult decisions.

"The decisions are in no way a reflection of the value or quality of the work undertaken by those affected."

It added further ways to increase income and make sings were being explored.

A Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) spokesperson previously said the country's national parks "are a source of great national pride" and the department understood "resourcing remains a challenge".

They said an "uplift" of £15m had been provided to national parks "in addition to up to £400m a year" towards "restoring nature across the country".

They added Defra would work with organisations to identify additional funding and "foster innovation".

In January, the Peak District National Park Authority said it was undertaking a "significant restructure", while in May it suggested a visitor charge could boost its coffers.
