I'm new here and am kinda new to cycling. I am looking for an inexpensive road bike to bike around my local park. I found this Miyata 10 speed bike on Craigslist and am wondering if its worth the $100 asking price. Link to post: Miyata 10 speed bike I also found this Raleigh Gran Sport. I research that Raleigh Gran sport are pretty good bikes too. What do you guys think of this one? Link: http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/5050521523.html Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, big chainring 06-02-15 09:21 PM Welcome to the forum. I think I would keep looking. The Miyata is really low end, and the Raleigh is a Grand Prix, mislisted by the seller. I am a fan of Grand Prixs, but that one looks like it needs a little help. oddjob2 06-02-15 09:30 PM The Raleigh looks more like a Record to me, but agree with Big Chainring, keep looking. 1sky1 06-02-15 09:50 PM Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking about the Raleigh but now I will keep looking. I will continue posting here for your assistance. Hope you guys don't mind. I just want to find the right bike to myself. TugaDude 06-02-15 10:22 PM Feel free to post questions about specific bikes, but do you know what size bike will fit you? That helps to narrow your search right away. Neither ad listed a frame size, but both appeared to be around 21" frames plus or minus. Listing wheel size isn't helpful for fit. How tall are you? Long legs, short legs? 1sky1 06-02-15 10:38 PM Originally Posted by TugaDude (Post 17861096) Feel free to post questions about specific bikes, but do you know what size bike will fit you? Probably a 52cm, maybe up to 54cm. ramzilla 06-03-15 10:46 AM The Miyata looks better than the Raleigh. It's red. Looks like fun. And, it's got stem shifters. Easier to ride in an upright position. Easier to convert to upright handlebars. It's an ordinary variety of bike & I'd be surprised if it has 26" wheels. It has to he the standard 27" wheels that were used back then. If it's not too hey I might give $75 for it. zukahn1 06-03-15 11:39 AM Originally Posted by wrk101 (Post 17861480) In a hotter market like yours, you are going to need to raise your budget to the $200 to $300 range, or most of what you find is going to be low end bikes that need a lot of work, or Walmart junkers. Miyata and Raleigh both made some nice bikes, but they also made low end basic stuff like these. +1 on this when you go up a bit in price range in the major hot markets the bikes improve a lot. For $250-300 you can get a really nice ready to ride bike under $200 in vintage bikes you see a lot of overpriced junk that needs work. FastJake 06-03-15 11:54 AM Both are hey, low-end bikes that need a lot of work. Raise your budget, hunt aggressively for a good deal, or overpay for junk like in the original post. The choice is yours. Google bike sizing. Figure out what size you need FIRST. 1sky1 06-04-15 06:07 AM Thank you all for the advice. I was thinking I should raise my budget to 200-250. The bikes that are below 200 do not look that good in the used bike market. I will continue hunting. oddjob2 06-04-15 06:55 AM I am heading for NNJ at the end of next week. I he a Fuji Grand Tourer that's almost finished with a full refurbishment; new cables, cable housing, tires, bearings, bar tape, cleaned, and polished. It is an entry level ride in your size, but they ride nicely and can take NYC punishment. 1sky1 06-04-15 09:45 AM Do you he any pictures of it? What is your asking price? I live in Brooklyn and do not he a car so NJ will be a bit far for me. Would you be able to meet in the city? oddjob2 06-04-15 10:22 AM Pics in 24 hours. I he met more than a few Brooklyn residents in Hoboken, who head back via ferry or PATH. $225. 1sky1 06-04-15 10:24 PM Hey guys, what are your thoughts on the 3 bikes below? Raleigh: https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/5051617689.html Peugeot https://newyork.craigslist.org/stn/bik/5051092597.html Peugeot Jubilee, a little small but seems ok https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/5011436366.html oddjob2 06-05-15 01:56 AM Raleigh is a woman's frame and too small. Peugeot Jubilee is too small as well. That lees the White Peugeot U-08, which is the right size, however that bike shows significant modification with a triple crank set and a rear deraileeur of unknown provenance. Also the brakes appear to be Weinmann center pulls rather than original Mafac Racers. Unless that seller offers you the opportunity to test ride it extensively, I would keep looking. ramzilla 06-07-15 09:55 AM I like the Raleigh with the step through frame. It's begging to be converted to upright handle bars. It also has threaded eyelets on rear stays for mounting a rack or some baskets. A nice little grocery getter. I generally oid made in France Peugeots. They he weird stuff like Maillard Helicomatic hubs and other troublesome parts. Anything made in Asia during the 80's is preferable. Including Asian made Raleighs. 1sky1 06-09-15 03:29 PM What do you guys think of these? I began looking into hybirds as I will be using it the bike to do some cummuting. Trek 730 Multi Track https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/5065273607.html Schwinn - unknown https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/5064564277.html RoadGuy 06-09-15 03:58 PM Originally Posted by 1sky1 (Post 17880105) What do you guys think of these? Trek 730 Multi Track https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/5065273607.html Schwinn - unknown https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/5064564277.html The Trek 730 21" hybrid is going to be too big for you. The Unknown Schwinn is way too big for you. "Peugeot Jubilee, a little small but seems ok". Does not look like a 46cm frame to me, unless the wheels are 24? or 26". If it has 27" wheels, it looks to be a 52 or 54cm bike. Craigslist Sellers often get the frame size wrong, so it pays to looks at the photos to get a rough idea of the frame size, and go see the bike if it appears to be the right size, regardless of what the Seller wrote in his/her ad. If you could get the price of the Miyata down to $50-$60 bucks it would be worth considering as an entry level throw around bike, if it fits. It's going to need new handbar wrap, and tires with tubes, and that could cost $75-$100 easy. I would plan on service/greasing all of the bearings (wheels, bottom bracket, and steering headset). This is a easy process that you can do at home with a few tools, and a little quality bearing grease to se yourself some money. 1sky1 06-09-15 08:30 PM I spoke to the guy about the Miyata and he's not willing to go down that far in price. What are your thoughts on Japanese bikes? I found these: Shogun https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/5066733060.html Bridgestone kabuki https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/5066720757.html Non Japanese but looks pretty decent, might be a bit tall Lotus 2000r https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/5066727072.html FastJake 06-09-15 08:42 PM Originally Posted by 1sky1 (Post 17880875) I spoke to the guy about the Miyata and he's not willing to go down that far in price. The other two are very entry level. The Lotus appears to he some rust issues that were crudely cleaned up but could be a good rider. Around here $200 would buy you more, but then this isn't NYC. 1sky1 06-09-15 09:47 PM Originally Posted by FastJake (Post 17880907) The Lotus is the best of the 3 and I think it will fit you at 5'7" (the seller is mistaken about the size.) Yeah I see the rust too and that worries me a bit. Whats the best possible way to clean up rust? I know repainting is probably a must right? oddjob2 06-09-15 09:59 PM The Lotus has what appears to be a replacement fork, which would be of concern if the original was crash damaged. Also, if you wanted fenders, I think it would be a no go. Also, IMHO, it is too small as a 50-52 cm frame. rekmeyata 06-10-15 09:11 AM The Miyata is low end bike that looks beat up on top of it, it's not worth $100, keep looking. I don't think any of the bikes you mentioned so far are worth their asking prices, they're all low end bikes including the Lotus that shouldn't sell for more than $75! The Schwinn is the only questionable one because I don't know the model of it. Of course all the value stuff is just my opinion, but personally I wouldn't buy any of those, except I would contact the owner of the Schwinn to get a model name. 1sky1 06-10-15 03:07 PM I'm going to check out the lotus to assess it. However, I came upon the following ad today and not sure if its too good to be true. Can you guys give some input on these bikes? It doesnt state the brand of the bike, it only says that the Brakes and Gears are Shimano and they are all new bikes. https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/5030618597.html Is it worth the price?
