Dedicating my first-ever LinkedIn post to share that I he (unofficially) finished my summer internship today! Over the past three months, I’ve worked as an intern on the SNAP Outreach Team at Connecticut Foodshare, a nonprofit organization that is at the forefront of addressing food insecurity through both direct support and advocacy in the state of Connecticut. As a Ph.D. student in Sociology, I’ve spent the last five years studying, reading, and writing about systemic oppression and structural disparities, but contributing to the tangible work of CTFS staff and volunteers, who are deeply committed to community wellness and hunger relief, has been an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening experience. I felt so much joy and appreciation engaging directly with community members and seeing the direct impact of my work. I also reflected a lot on the role of academic knowledge production in the everyday lives of people, and the importance of intentional and meaningful partnerships between policymakers, scholars, and community leaders--especially in light of the recent decimation of social safety net programs by the current administration. Special thank you to Chris, Ruty, Diana, and Arianna, with whom I worked every day in the almost-empty Bloomfield office. There are some big transitions happening at the organization, and I am so grateful to he caught the end of the Bloomfield era (I did just make that up) with you all! And thank you to Brittney for letting me spend the end of my internship dipping my toes into program evaluation work. Lastly, thank you to the New England Council for sponsoring this internship. These past three months he been an incredible experience for many reasons--one of which was hing the funds to financially support myself over the summer, an unfortunately very common and structural issue that many academics, especially graduate students, must nigate. Back to being a grad student for now--but more to come! For the next academic year, I’ll be working on my dissertation research on the experiences of Ph.D. "noncompleters" (those who left their social science doctoral programs without finishing). If you or anyone in your network is interested in participating, I'd love to connect!
