But 27 years later, she reflects on how it shaped her life. She shares her journey, from nigating changes to prioritizing well-being.
Finding Purpose in a CDCR Career
What led you to a career with CDCR?
“My career with CDCR started by accident,” she said. “In 1997, I worked for the State Legislature. The instability led me to apply for an Office Technician position with the Board of Prison Terms.” The prison terms office is now the Board of Parole Hearings.
Once in CDCR, she found her place, advancing through roles in the Board, Legal, and Parole divisions. “I worked on class action lawsuits that changed policies,” she said. “I saw CDCR shift from warehousing offenders to rehabilitation.”
How do you balance work and personal life?“I focus on my family, friends, and activities unrelated to work,” she said. A fitness enthusiast, she believes exercise is essential for balance.
Her passion is cardio drumming.
“It’s a full-body workout that builds endurance and brain fitness,” she said. “Each class covers up to six miles.” She also enjoys hiking and paddle-boarding. “Being outdoors refreshes my mind and soul.”
What advice do you he for those considering a CDCR career?“CDCR offers great career growth,” she said. “Take promotional tests—even if you don’t think you qualify. Let them tell you no.”
She encourages others to network. “Every day is an interview for your next role,” she said. “I was 51 when I became a parole agent.”
“Never underestimate yourself,” she added.
Looking Back on a Rewarding CareerAs she nears retirement, she reflects on her proudest moments. One includes earning a Gold Star medal. “CDCR ge me a fulfilling career,” she said. “I work to live, not live to work.”
