In this Week in Review for March 28, we spotlight a parole agent’s career journey and focus on well-being, celebrate four staff honored in a Salute to Public Safety, and recognize National Physicians Week.

Staff Spotlight – 3 Questions 3 Questions with Parole Agent Tracy Master

Parole Agent Tracy Master never expected to he a decades-long career with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). But 27 years later, she reflects on how it shaped her life. She shares her journey, from nigating changes to prioritizing well-being.

Tracy Master, PAI hiking Finding Purpose in a CDCR Career What led you to a career with CDCR?

“My career with CDCR started by accident,” she said. “In 1997, I worked for the State Legislature. The instability led me to apply for an Office Technician position with the Board of Prison Terms.” The prison terms office is now the Board of Parole Hearings.

Once in CDCR, she found her place, advancing through roles in the Board, Legal, and Parole divisions. “I worked on class action lawsuits that changed policies,” she said. “I saw CDCR shift from warehousing offenders to rehabilitation.”

How do you balance work and personal life?

“I focus on my family, friends, and activities unrelated to work,” she said. A fitness enthusiast, she believes exercise is essential for balance.

Her passion is cardio drumming.

“It’s a full-body workout that builds endurance and brain fitness,” she said. “Each class covers up to six miles.” She also enjoys hiking and paddle-boarding. “Being outdoors refreshes my mind and soul.”

What advice do you he for those considering a CDCR career?

“CDCR offers great career growth,” she said. “Take promotional tests—even if you don’t think you qualify. Let them tell you no.”

She encourages others to network. “Every day is an interview for your next role,” she said. “I was 51 when I became a parole agent.”

“Never underestimate yourself,” she added.

Looking Back on a Rewarding Career

As she nears retirement, she reflects on her proudest moments. One includes earning a Gold Star medal. “CDCR ge me a fulfilling career,” she said. “I work to live, not live to work.”

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) Sandra Guzman and Nathaniel McKee improve the health of incarcerated individuals through personalized nutrition care. Meanwhile, Food Administrator Michael Hansen ensures meals meet specific dietary requirements. Together, they make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of those they serve. Honoring physicians during National Physicians Week

During National Physicians Week, observed March 25-31, we recognize the dedication, compassion and expertise of physicians across our organization. In a message of appreciation, CCHCS leadership emphasized the vital role physicians play in advancing patient-centered care and supporting the California Model.

This year’s theme, “Together We Thrive,” highlights the strength of collaboration in medicine. Our physicians serve not only as caregivers, but also as educators, mentors and advocates—impacting lives every day.

Penny Thiels began with CDCR as an office technician in the 1990s. She then left the department to get her teaching credentials and taught school in the community. Now she can be found at High Desert State Prison as a recreation coach. Read her story.

In the Community Salute to Public Safety: Chino Valley Chamber honors CDCR staff Lieutenant receives award. Sergeant receives award. CIM Chino Chamber awards 2025.

During the recent Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce Salute to Public Safety event, staff from two CDCR institutions were honored.

California Institution for Women Associate Warden Delinia Lewis presented awards to her institution’s staff. Lt. Francine Hinostroza, above left, received the 2025 Supervisor of the Year while Sgt. Anna Avina, above center, was named the 2025 Employee of the Year. Read the full story.

California Institution for Men (CIM) acting Warden Eric Mejia also presented awards to two staff members. CIM Correctional Officer Daniel Lopez was awarded Officer of the Year while correctional plant supervisor Manny Rodriguez was named Employee of the Year at the chamber event. Read the full story.

In Our Institutions CSP-LAC hosts ‘Between the Lines Basketball’ to build connections CIM Between the Lines basketball event

California State Prison Los Angeles County (CSP-LAC) hosted the “Between the Lines Basketball” event March 17. The Facility A event was more than a game. It was a step toward bridging the gap between the incarcerated population and the broader community.

Fostering Unity Through Basketball

The event featured a competitive basketball game between community members and the incarcerated population. Every play demonstrated unity, understanding, and mutual respect. More than just a game, it reflected the mission of creating a more inclusive society.

Co-founder Torrey praised CSP-LAC for its welcoming and professional atmosphere. “I felt like I was at a Rucker’s game in New York,” he said, emphasizing the positive energy of the experience.

Actor Danny Trejo recently spoke to 70 participants at the Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) in Los Angeles.

For those in the MCRP, Trejo understands their rehabilitation journeys, hing spent time in multiple California prisons. After his incarceration, he has since dedicated his life to helping his community and those battling drug and alcohol addiction. Read the full story.

Santa Fe Fuego to Play Game in San Quentin Prison vs San Quentin Giants. The Santa Fe Fuego will play an exhibition spring training game against the San Quentin Giants at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center the week of May 8.
