This free online calculator shows the work for addition and subtraction of integers, and also when to change the sign for subtracting negative numbers.
Add and subtract positive and negative integers, whole numbers, or decimal numbers. Use numbers, plus + and minus -. You can also group integer addition and subtraction in parentheses ( ) and the calculator will solve the equation.
While decimal numbers are not integers we allow decimal inputs in this calculator because of feedback we received from our users.
This calculator solves problems using common PEMDAS order of operations rules.
Input Examples Inputs Answer No parentheses -10 - -22 + 33 45 With parentheses (-10) - (-22) + 33 45 With grouping -10 - (-22 + 33) -21 Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative NumbersThis adding and subtracting integers calculator solves equations with positive and negative numbers using addition and subtraction. The calculator uses standard mathematical rules to solve the equations.

Rules for Adding IntegersIf signs are the same keep the signs and add the numbers.
(-) + (-) = (-) (+) + (+) = (+) -21 + -9 = - 30 (+7) + (+13) = (+20)If signs are different subtract the smaller number from the larger number and keep the sign of the larger number.
(-Large) + (+Small) = (-) (-Small) + (+Large) = (+) (-13) + (+5) = (-8) (-7) + (+9) = (+2) Rules for Subtracting IntegersKeep the sign of the first number. Change the subtraction operations to addition operations. Change the sign of the numbers that follow to the opposite, i.e., positive becomes negative, and negative becomes positive. Then follow the rules for addition problems.
(-) - (-) = (-) - (+) = (+) - (-) = (-15) - (-7) = (-5) - (+6) = (+4) - (-3) = (-15) + (+7) = (-8) (-5) + (-6) = (-11) (+4) + (+3) = (+7) Order of OperationsPEMDAS is a common order of operations acronym. Order of operations means you should solve math equations in a specific order.
PEMDAS stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction"
Parts of equations within parentheses - also known as grouping - are solved first. After grouping, exponents are solved next, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. While considering these rules, always work left to right when solving equations.
It's important to note that the PEMDAS acronym might be misleading. Multiplication is not always performed before division just because the M occurs before the D in the acronym. Once you get to the level of doing multiplication and division, × and ÷, do those operations as they occur in the equation from left to right.
Similarly addition is not always performed before subtraction just because the A occurs before the S in the acronym. Once you get to the level of doing addition and subtraction, + and −, do those operations as they occur in the equation from left to right.
More about IntegersPositive and negative integers signify both direction and magnitude. Direction means that integers can tell you whether their value is greater than zero which is positive, or less than zero which is negative.
Magnitude means that integers can tell you how much more or less extreme their value is given a positive or negative reference point. Together, positive and negative integers can represent of a wide range of real-world information from bank transactions and temperature change, to elevation and electrical charge.
