Without doubt, Tom Hanks is one of Tinsel Town’s most beloved actors. His career has spanned decades and over the years he has appeared in a wealth of movies including Big (1988), Sing Private Ryan (1998), Castway (2000), Sing Mr. Banks (2013), and A Man Called Otto (2022), to name but a few.
Hanks’ films he ranged from comedies and dramas, to thrillers, war films, and animated pictures. He’s dabbled in a bit of horror with The ‘Burbs (1989), and even found time to play American icons in such movies as A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood (2019), and Elvis (2022).
In this post I am taking a look back at Hanks’ film portfolio, with a rundown of all his movies (including films he has cameoed in). I will be going through his film career, decade-by-decade, to showcase all of the pictures he has featured in over the years.

The 1980s

Hanks kicked off his movie career at the beginning of the 1980s with a small part in the horror film, He Knows You’re Alone. From here he appeared in Mazes in Monsters, and Bachelor Party, before getting his breakthrough role in the hit comedy, Splash.
Splash was a big deal for Hanks and as the decade continued, the actor appeared in new movies every year, with some of his most notable offerings including The Money Pit, Dragnet, and Big.

1990s

Moving into the ‘90s now, and with Hanks a well-known name thanks to various successes in the 1980s, the actor’s star continued to rise. He started the decade off with Joe Versus the Volcano, opposite Meg Ryan, before appearing in The Bonfire of the Vanities with Melanie Griffith and Bruce Willis.
From here he appeared in some of the biggest movies of his career, included A League of Their Own, Philadelphia, Forest Gump, Apollo 13, Sing Private Ryan, and The Green Mile. Hanks also re-teamed with Meg Ryan for Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail.
It was during the 1990s that Hanks also took on a role that he would revisit multiple times, including twice in this decade. The role was that of Sheriff Woody – a character who appeared in the animated Disney-Pixar movies, Toy Story and Toy Story 2, which were both huge hits and helped the actor win over a whole new generation of fans.

Into the ‘00s now, and Hanks’ career continued to go from strength-to-strength, with the actor kicking off 2000 with Castaway – another one of his beloved movies. Films that followed included Road to Perdition, Catch Me If You Can, and The Polar Express.
It was during the ‘00s that Hanks also took on the role of Robert Langdon for two movies based on Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code books. The first was 2006’s The Da Vinci Code, while the second was 2009’s Angels and Demons.

Heading into the 2010s and Tom Hanks continued to appear in a wealth of movies, with films including Larry Crowne with Julia Roberts, Captain Phillips, and Sully: Miracle on the Hudson. The actor also returned to the Toy Story franchise for two big screen adventures: Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4, and reprised the role of Robert Langdon for Inferno.

And finally, moving into the 2020s, Hanks continued to appear in a string of movies, including News of the World, Here, and Elvis, where he played the role of Colonel Tom Parker. He also played Geppetto in Pinocchio.
