Sydney Sweeney (born September 12, 1997, Spokane, Washington, U.S.) is an American actress who rose to prominence in roles on the teen drama television series Euphoria (2019– ) and the first season (2021) of the acclaimed anthology series The White Lotus, and in films such as director Quentin Tarantino’s comedy-drama Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). She is also known for her roles in the dystopian drama television series The Handmaid’s Tale (2018) and the comedy-drama series Everything Sucks! (2018).

Early life and first roles

Sweeney was born in Spokane, Washington, the eldest child of Lisa (née Mudd) Sweeney, a lawyer, and Steven Sweeney, a health-care professional. In her youth, Sweeney’s parents encouraged her to “fall in love with as many things as possible,” which led her to participate in several sports, including soccer, skiing, golf, and mixed martial arts, as well as performing arts, such as ballet.

Determined to break into acting, Sweeney successfully auditioned for a part in the independent horror film ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction (2009), which was filming near her hometown. Her younger brother, Trent, also made an appearance in the film. Sweeney eventually convinced her family to move to Los Angeles so she could pursue an acting career. Her early roles included appearances on the television series Heroes (2009), Criminal Minds (2009), 90210 (2010), Grey’s Anatomy (2014), and Pretty Little Liars (2017).

Sweeney’s career gained momentum in 2018 when she was cast in the role of high-school student and drama-club member Emaline Addario in the comedy-drama series Everything Sucks! In that same year, she portrayed the pious and obedient Eden Spencer in the acclaimed drama series The Handmaid’s Tale. She went on to appear with Amy Adams in the psychological thriller miniseries Sharp Objects (2018).

In 2019 she was cast as Cassie Howard in the drama series Euphoria, which focuses on teenage characters wrestling with weighty issues such as drug addiction and identity-based insecurity. It was a breakout role for Sweeney, who received acclaim—as well as an Emmy nomination in 2022—for portraying Cassie’s complex journey of dealing with unreliable friends and difficult sexual relationships.

In 2021 Sweeney starred in the anthology series The White Lotus, a satirical drama that follows the misadventures of hotel guests and employees over the course of an eventful week. She was cast as Olivia Mossbacher, the privileged daughter of wealthy parents. Olivia spends the week vacationing at a posh Hawaiian resort while she engages in a sibling rivalry, indulges in drug use, and is betrayed by a close friend, all while trying to fulfill her desire to meet her parents’ expectations. In 2022 Sweeney garnered an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for her performance.

Sweeney also landed several film roles in the late 2010s and early 2020s. She starred as a teenager possessed by evil spirits in the horror film Along Came the Devil (2018), and she played an aspiring actress in the psychological thriller Clementine (2019). Later in 2019 she portrayed Snake, a member of cult leader Charles Manson’s “Family,” in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Additionally, she garnered critical acclaim for portraying American former intelligence specialist and whistleblower Reality Winner in the biopic Reality (2023). Her other credits from 2023 include the popular rom-com Anyone but You. The following year Sweeney starred alongside Dakota Johnson in Madame Web, a superhero film based on a Marvel character.

Sweeney launched the production company Fifty-Fifty Films in 2020 to create opportunities for female authors, screenwriters, and producers. The company’s first project will be the HBO series The Players Table, based on author Jessica Goodman’s murder-mystery novel They Wish They Were Us (2020) and will feature Sweeney and the singer Halsey in leading roles.

Making news beyond her roles

As her star has risen, Sweeney has also made wes in popular culture. She put herself on a shortlist of the biggest stars in Hollywood when she made her Saturday Night Live hosting debut on March 2, 2024, just a few months after the premiere of Anyone But You. Her costar in the film, Glen Powell, made a cameo appearance on the episode, poking fun at the rumors regarding the pair’s alleged offscreen romance.

In May 2025 Sweeney made headlines when she announced her collaboration with men’s hygiene brand Dr. Squatch. The product was “Sydney’s Bathwater Bliss,” a soap that had a unique ingredient: her bathwater. The special edition soap bars were a success, with all 5,000 selling out quickly and even being resold online for profit. Some were unhappy with Sweeney over the product’s perceived sexualization of women. However, others claimed that she was calling attention to the objectification of her own body and found the move empowering. Just two months later, another marketing campaign featuring Sweeney sparked intense debate. In a commercial for American Eagle, which had the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” the star discussed the heritability of traits and genetics. While some thought the campaign promoted eugenics and Western beauty standards, others argued it was simply a play on words.
