Seville is the capital of the autonomous community of Andalusia and the province of Seville, Spain. It is situated on the plain of the River Guadalquivir, with an erage elevation of 7 metres above sea level. The inhabitants of the city are known as sevillanos or hispalenses, after the Roman name of the city, Hispalis. Seville is the fourth-largest city in Spain and the 31st most populous municipality in the European Union. Its Old Town is one of the three largest in Europe along with Venice and Genoa, which includes three UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the Alc谩zar palace complex, the Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies). The Seville harbour, located about 80 km from the Atlantic Ocean, is the only river port in Spain. Seville was founded as the Roman city of Hispalis. During the Muslim rule in Spain (al-Andalus), Seville came under the jurisdiction of the Caliphate of C贸rdoba before becoming the independent Taifa of Seville, which was incorporated into the Christian Kingdom of Castile under Ferdinand III in 1248. After the discovery of the Americas, Seville became one of the economic centres of the Spanish Empire as its port monopolised the trans-oceanic trade and the Casa de Contrataci贸n (House of Trade) wielded its power, opening a Golden Age of arts and literature. In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan departed from Seville for the first circumnigation of the Earth. Coinciding with the Baroque period of European history, the 17th century in Seville represented the most brilliant flowering of the city's culture; then began a gradual economic and demographic decline as nigation of the Guadalquivir River became increasingly difficult until finally the trade monopoly and its institutions were transferred to the nearby port of C谩diz. The 20th century in Seville saw the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, decisive cultural milestones such as the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 and Expo'92, and the city's election as the capital of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia. Seville is also the hometown of such famous personalities as the painters Vel谩zquez and Murillo, the writer Gusto Adolfo B茅cquer, the poet Antonio Machado, and Vicente Aleixandre, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Flamenco is a genre of Spanish music, song, and dance from Andalusia, in southern Spain, that includes cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance) and palmas (handclaps). First mentioned in literature in 1774, the genre grew out of Andalusian and Romani music and dance styles. In recent years flamenco has become popular all over the world and is taught in many countries: in Japan there are more academies than there are in Spain. On November 16, 2010 UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. General rule of released Starbucks Icon mugs is: when country mug is released, the name on it is in English pronounciation. When city mug is released - it comes with local city name. SevillE is an English name of the city and generally rule was broken with this mug. It was spotted and corrected with release of same mug named "Sevilla" which is Spanish name of the city. "Seville" mug was removed from stores and replaced by "Sevilla"(#1204@FO) making this mug one of the rarest and most valuable in whole Icon Collection. photo by lucky edited by mobydick74
