History and Heritage of VondelparkVondelpark Amsterdam has a rich history dating back to 1865 when it first opened as "Nieuwe Park" (New Park). Originally designed by landscape architect Jan Did Zocher in the fashionable English landscape style, the park was created on former marshland through the efforts of prominent Amsterdam citizens.
The park was renamed Vondelpark Amsterdam Netherlands in 1867 to honor the famous Dutch poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679), whose bronze statue by Louis Royer still stands proudly in the park today. The park expanded to its current 47 hectares by 1877 and has since become an integral part of Amsterdam's cultural landscape.
