Notre Dame Fighting Irish football head coach Marcus Freeman has addressed the ongoing speculation that he could make a jump to the NFL.
Like every top college football head coach, Marcus Freeman’s name is always floated in NFL head coach hiring cycle rumors. While some top NCAA coaches had forgettable tenures in the NFL (Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Matt Rhule and Chip Kelly stand out), others like Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer enjoyed immediate success in the pros.
Earlier this week, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported that there’s “some high regard for” Freeman in the New York Giants’ building. The Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll after Sunday’s 24-20 road loss to the Chicago Bears.
“There is some high regard in the Giants building for Marcus Freeman.”

— Doug Rush (@TheDougRush) November 12, 2025Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Marcus Freeman was asked if he discusses the rumors about taking another job with his Notre Dame players. Freeman ge this response, per Mike Berardino of the South Bend Tribune:
“If I feel like it’s necessary, I do. A lot of times, in things I say to the team, it may come out…A great example is, ‘What’s the noise you’re putting in your head?’ Just because the noise in somebody else’s head is one thing doesn’t mean it has to be your noise.
As I’m sure I’ve said before, just because somebody else might be saying my name’s up for whatever job or being considered, that isn’t the noise that I’m going to put in my head. That isn’t my noise.”

Freeman took over as the head coach of the Fighting Irish after Brian Kelly left for the LSU Tigers in 2022. Freeman made his head coaching debut in Notre Dame’s 2021 Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma State.
Notre Dame has maintained its status as a top college football program under Marcus Freeman, who’s gone 40-12-0 as their HC, per Pro Football Reference. They reached the national championship game last year, dropping a heartbreaker to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The No. 9 ranked Fighting Irish should qualify for the 12-team playoff format again this year, barring a brutal late-season collapse. They visit No. 22 ranked Pittsburgh on Saturday before closing out the regular season with contests against Syracuse and Stanford.
